I've got an 800 but I think the process is the same for the 500. So what you do is:
plug your Garmin in to your computer,
click on the map link eg http://ridewithgps.com/routes/8043495
top right of your screen it says "Export " in orange, click on this word and on the rhs of the screen you will be given some options in orange, if you've got a 500 click on TCX Course, if you've got an 800 click on GPX Track (NOT GPX Route)
The route will be downloaded to your computer. Now drag the route from wherever your downloaded files go to, into the "New Files" folder in your Garmin. The next time you fire up your Garmin it will convert the 'gpx' file into a 'fit' file and pop it in the Courses folder on your Garmin.

Job done.

Hate to contest what you say Gary but..... 800 use tcx 500 use one of the others not sure which.
If there isnt a new files folder then make one in the main Garmin folder.
