Although I say it myself, this route is a little cracker with smooth roads, steady climbs and superb downhill blasts. So don't save your legs for the bank holiday Monday ride, do both ! We'll be stopping at the Filling Station in Tintern for lunch.

Looks good Gary, I'll be there...........hopefully I can leave the canoe at home and come out on the "summer bike" for a change.

Hate to be the doom-sayer, but it's the Severn Bridge half-marathon on Sunday. Lots of the roads this side of the bridge are closed to all traffic (this very much includes bikes - there is a note on the organiser's website saying runners won't come into contact with cyclists!).
Worth a full check of the website.

Gary, looks like we will have to go out to the bridge via Pilning and Northwick then along passage road to the south side of the bridge.

This avoids the runners/road closures.

Thanks for the heads-up on the Severn Bridge Half Marathon on Sunday Waysie.

As I understand it, the old Severn Bridge will be closed from 8am until about 1pm. The eastbound carriageway will be used by the half-marathoners, so that's off-limits for us, but the westbound carriageway will be open for the Severn Bridge Sportive so this maybe our way across. So this is Plan A. We approach the bridge on exactly the same route as the sportive so we look like we are part of the sportive and are able to ride over on the actual road with the rest of 'em, unless some eagle-eyed marshall notices we don't have sportive numbers on our bikes and stops us. If this happens, Plan B is to cycle on the westbound footpath/cyclepath (reached from Passage Road) we sometimes take to cross the bridge. If this way is barred then we'll have to take Plan C which I'm working on at the moment (I'm thinking a ride out to Clevedon).

Watch this space for Plan C.

Ken, you beat me to it with the Passage Road option, the question is, when they "close" the bridge will they also prevent people from using the footpath/cyclepath ?

Plan A - pretend to be part of the sportive and cycle across the Severn Bridge on the carriageway
Plan B - cross the Severn Bridge on the westbound footpath/cyclepath
Plan C - about turn and head for Clevedon (route to follow shortly)

We will be heading for Llandogo unless all our attempts to cross the bridge are thwarted.

Hot off the press, Plan C http://ridewithgps.com/routes/10097943

I know most of you will be tucked up in bed by now but if anyone does see this before the ride tomorrow, just letting you know I've made a slight change in the approach to the old Severn Bridge the ride takes as the bit I've taken out will be closed for the 1/2 marathon. The revised route (also known as Plan A) is on a new rwgps map called Llandogo 2
